Building a basic family history
$125/one & half hours — The basic building blocks of researching family history is to begin with a plan. In this workshop, I explain the basics of genealogy and best principals of research in an Irish heritage context. I will give you a template for building your family history which you should amend to your own needs.
The Historical Method
$125/one & half hours — The study of historical research and writing by historians is guided by what is known as the historical method. In essence the method is a series of techniques and principles which keep the historian from (often unwittingly) falling into the pitfalls of bad history, pseudo-research and echoing dogma and propaganda. Once you understand the tools for producing good history - your work will always be better. In this workshop I will provide with the most relevant steps of the historical method as practiced by historians and genealogists.
Sources for Irish Genealogy
$125/one & half hours — Uncovering all the sources for Irish genealogy is a constant in flux search! Unlike the UK, our sources are in a much more confused, degraded and scattered state with the effects of British colonisation, Irish Civil War and an oral rather than written Gaelic tradition reducing available sources for Irish Family History significantly. That said, there is a rich collection of possibilities and knowing enough about each, is essential if you want to shortcut your time and costs in examining the most relevant archive, repository, library or website.
Online resources for Irish Genealogy
$125/one & half hours — This is a follow-on workshop form the Sources for Irish Genealogy where we focus on online resources which may be applied to Irish genealogy research. These websites and platforms have grown exponentially in the last five years, but vary greatly in their usefulness. We will examine those that hold the most promise for your own family history and how best to use their tools and data.
Problems with Irish Genealogical research
$95/one hour — This workshop focusses on the common issues with Irish genealogical research and a guide towards overcoming the pitfalls of dealing with private & public archives, personal collections, dead-ends of research and conflicting evidence. We also have a cheat-sheet to help shorten the journey.
$125/one & half hours — The extended class focusses on particular problems which arise out of your current research and how they may be overcome or at least engaged with enough ‘for closure’.
Irish History for Dummies
$95/one hour — This is a deep dive into Irish history to provide an accurate canvass of background context to your research. Irish history is plagued with propaganda masked as nationalist history, reactionary revisionism and political and religious dogma. We will attempt to strip as much as that noise away in learning something of the social history of the people - the coismhunitir. Your own personal research can only be enhanced with a wider understanding of the social world your ancestors lived in.
Personal audit of your work
$125/hour, (or pro/rata) — I will audit the work you have carried out to date and provide feedback and my advice on where to proceed.
Visiting Ireland and on-site research
$125/hour, (or pro/rata) — We can help organise your visit to Ireland to help you get the most enjoyment, research work and a lifetime of memories out of your journey here. We also will work with you to ensure that you are able to plan to get the most benefit from your Irish visit

Guided tour of your Irish history
$125/hour, travel extra—While in Ireland, we can provide an experienced guide for part or parts of your visit - especially useful for out of the way tourist attractions or private expeditions to locations of personal interest.
